Taking it personally Again, look at the situation and see if there could be another explanation, one that doesnt involve you. Refer to specific behaviours rather than making sweeping statements. Healing your inner child The idea that each one of us has an inner child has been the butt of jokes in recent years, and yet its a concept that is useful in understanding ourselves. Similarly, someone who is anxious about the security of their home might double check that they have locked the door, whereas someone with OCD might check repeatedly, locking and unlocking. Now I can talk it through. Lack of self-confidence and low self-esteem are other maintenance factors for Anxiety. Stand, sit or lie comfortably. It often means looking for a compromise solution, where you can have what you need without depriving someone else - known as a win-win solution. Anxiety and negative thinking can cause you to lose your sense of perspective and allow small things to become too important, so this is a very useful step that will stop you worrying needlessly about small things.
Setbacks Setbacks are bound to be more worrying, but virtually everybody has them. Dont, whatever you do, belittle your achievements. Research has shown that most of us are able to have these thoughts without getting upset or obsessed with them - we dont attach any importance to them. Now the lawn looks better, but any gardener will tell you that a dandelion will recover even if you pull its leaves off, so you grab a trowel and dig down into the soil to get the root out. The obsessive thoughts are often about dirt and disease, or about harming someone, either by accident or by giving way to an impulse. YES/NO Each time you make a note of your thoughts also mention the situation and the intensity of any feelings you had, both physical and emotional. In those days parents werent allowed to visit, a whole week with no contact! I had a traumatic experience when I was about 13 - I was raped . ABOUT TREATMENT I tried hypnotherapy in my teens. The most useful kind of exercise is aerobic exercise - that is, something that gets you out of breath. Relax your arms and let them fall back comfortably. With a core belief such as Im useless at everything or I never get anything right you could well find that other people see you quite differently - as competent and reliable for instance. The right to your feelings. You will, for sure, have learnt much about yourself, and about Anxiety. You may decide to explore your creativity, learn a new skill or widen your social network. Structure the goals in small controlled steps. All that we are is the result of what we have thought. All of the techniques used for managing Anxiety will be useful, but you will have to allow the time for your body to get used to the reduction in your dosage. my heart started to beat rapidly . Relax and feel the difference. Script for muscle relaxation This simple relaxation exercise teaches you to tense each set of muscles in turn and then relax it. Breathe out gently through your mouth - make the flame flicker, but do not blow it out. I started work in February, to be ready to travel in July. The mind is everything. Being dedant on other people to manage your life and your Anxiety also affects your self-confidence. For some people the lack of confidence goes deeper than the Anxiety, into a fundamental part of their make up. Feel anxious all the time. Many Anxiety sufferers are very busy people, juggling family commitments, work and Anxiety in one endless rush. This increases your sense of isolation and adds to your stress, which only makes the OCD worse. Typical situations which cause anxiety are: You may find that one person has a soothing presence and you enjoy their company, while another is helpful in a practical way. Current advice to doctors is to only prescribe these drugs for short periods (two to four weeks) and only for severe Anxiety.

Write down in your notebook exactly what you intend to do, and what you expect the outcome to be for each of the two theories: Example: Test: I wont do my cleaning ritual in the living room for one day.
Very often these beliefs are so deeply ingrained that were not aware of them, or if we are, they feel like universal truths. Many of the symptoms of withdrawal are similar to those of Anxiety and it may be difficult to tell whether what you are experiencing is temporary or whether the underlying Anxiety is resurfacing. Food: you may be afraid of being sick or choking, or you may have an obsession with food hygiene. Your brain sends messages back to your body so that it can start the process of healing the damage youve just done to yourself. For example, someone with a cleaning ritual might choose to stop cleaning the living room while still cleaning the kitchen and bathroom on the basis that the greatest risk of infection lies in those two rooms. But this thing doesnt always have to sting and burn. Kim had a long, difficult struggle with Anxiety disorder, and kept it a secret for quite a good portion of her life. If they have a fear of having a panic attack, then they need to learn to be in situations that might provoke one. Breathe out in stages, with a short pause between each one - use two, three or four stages. Greek plays always aimed to send people home feeling better in this way - even a tragic play or film, while sad at the time, produces a feeling of release and catharsis afterwards. And the more you practice this reversal of thought, the better you will get at it and be able to manage your Anxiety attack better the next time you feel one coming on. What if they had stopped breathing? They may decide that youre just shy, or guess that theres some sort of problem. The absolute WORST thing you can do is to act as if they are LYING or ACTING to get attention. The natural sugar (or fructose) that occurs in fruit doesnt have this effect on your body. If I have a panic attack and the teacher sees me theyll think Im a bad parent and a stupid person. In addition they can remind you to use your coping skills. Self-fulfilling prophesies will lead you to give up trying to recover, because you think the world doesnt hold anything worthwhile for you. If getting out of a certain situation appears to make Anxiety go away, then it seems logical to avoid going into the situation in the first place. This means that the counsellor must be appropriately trained and qualified, work to a Code of Ethics & Practice and be subject to a complaints procedure.

Its not about always getting your own way, or getting other people to do what you want.

Finding the motivation for change If change feels too challenging, and you arent sure that you want to engage with it, then try this exercise. If they need a lot of support from that person they may then start to feel guilty about it, or perhaps resentful that the person isnt doing enough to help. Why should this be? It helps to talk to someone about this, and if you dont have someone you can confide in, then use a helpline or online service (see Apdix 2 for details). If you continue with your healthy lifestyle, and your positive thinking, continue to be more assertive in dealing with other people and continue to release feelings instead of bottling them up, then you will change in ways that you would not have thought possible. Emotional reasoning can also be a barrier to good decision making. While you are in the grip of an Anxiety disorder its easy to think that life would be wonderful and simple if only you werent so anxious. I quit a year and a half ago, now feel healthier though still anxious but now I dont have the added anxiety of needing a tab (cigarette).
