Healing your inner child The idea that each one of us has an inner child has been the butt of jokes in recent years, and yet its a concept that is useful in understanding ourselves.

When you are lying awake, are you troubled by anxious thoughts and/or physical symptoms of Anxiety? I had a good childhood. This can cause unpleasant, and possibly dangerous, physical symptoms including convulsions. Breathe out. I have to see the teacher for ten minutes on Tuesday but I cant go because Ill have a panic attack. Once I started recording it over the next few days it got much worse and I was up to checking 8 by 8 times. Now repeat your goal - because you have done it before your physical Anxiety will be lower, and you will be able to pay attention to your thoughts. The problem with avoidance is that it means you never test out your belief that you will be anxious if you enter the situation or engage with the behaviour. Yes, because I was the youngest and I couldnt compete with the others. Typical thoughts are: She ignored me, she must hate me. Hes staring at me, I must be doing something odd. If someone you know passes you without speaking, your intuition, coloured by Anxiety, might well lead you to assume they were angry with you for some reason. Heres an example for an agoraphobic who wants to get back to work: Travel on the bus. This is why it can sometimes seem that an Anxiety sufferer gets some benefit from their illness. And yet these problems are extremely common, so there must be thousands of people with similar records who are now leading happy and fulfilled lives. Dont be concerned if this haps to you, its only a sign that anxiety was making you very tired. I also tell myself how much time I can sd on something, and that helps me to stop and walk away from it. Its easy for any of us to develop the habit of using the expression what if? This is where we need to change our habits and replace this expression with the words so what! Consider the following question. Instead of dreading the bolt from the blue, you can now look back and see how your Anxiety developed in the first place. Some of them are already fully recovered, and some of them are able to help others by working as volunteers with one of the charities in the field. But at some point you will probably ask the question why me? You may think something along the lines of look at Mrs Jones down the road, shes had plenty of stress and she doesnt panic. If you think that your panic attack is actually a heart attack, or that panic will damage your heart, you will retreat to the armchair and behave like an invalid. Or look at it another way: Why does jaunty music make us want to tap our toes?

Taking it personally Again, look at the situation and see if there could be another explanation, one that doesnt involve you. Refer to specific behaviours rather than making sweeping statements. Healing your inner child The idea that each one of us has an inner child has been the butt of jokes in recent years, and yet its a concept that is useful in understanding ourselves. Similarly, someone who is anxious about the security of their home might double check that they have locked the door, whereas someone with OCD might check repeatedly, locking and unlocking. Now I can talk it through. Lack of self-confidence and low self-esteem are other maintenance factors for Anxiety. Stand, sit or lie comfortably. There will always be some people that dont like aspects of your character, but that doesnt mean youre unlikeable as a person. Some types are more suited to short-term work, with a fixed number of sessions. Hold it and really squeeze your lips together. Here are some suggestions: Take a hot relaxing bath. Read cartoons, in a newspaper or book. Also you may feel sad at the number of tedious things you are now able to do. By reading their stories we hope you can see that Anxiety is an illness that strikes ordinary people. There is an element of risk involved in undertaking recovery work. This decision is complicated by the fact that you are bound to feel a bit daunted at the start of a self-help programme - the journey seems so long, and the ultimate goal of recovery so very unobtainable. I had a phobia of thunderstorms and especially the noise they make which started when I was very young, after a bad experience. Ive been places I never thought Id go - I went to Old Trafford to see the flowers for the Munich memorial. When you first start on exposure work it can be helpful to adopt a range of coping skills. Anxiety and negative thinking can cause you to lose your sense of perspective and allow small things to become too important, so this is a very useful step that will stop you worrying needlessly about small things.

Setbacks Setbacks are bound to be more worrying, but virtually everybody has them. Dont, whatever you do, belittle your achievements. Research has shown that most of us are able to have these thoughts without getting upset or obsessed with them - we dont attach any importance to them. Now the lawn looks better, but any gardener will tell you that a dandelion will recover even if you pull its leaves off, so you grab a trowel and dig down into the soil to get the root out. The obsessive thoughts are often about dirt and disease, or about harming someone, either by accident or by giving way to an impulse. YES/NO Each time you make a note of your thoughts also mention the situation and the intensity of any feelings you had, both physical and emotional. In those days parents werent allowed to visit, a whole week with no contact! I had a traumatic experience when I was about 13 - I was raped . ABOUT TREATMENT I tried hypnotherapy in my teens. The most useful kind of exercise is aerobic exercise - that is, something that gets you out of breath. Relax your arms and let them fall back comfortably. Social Anxiety Disorder This type of disorder more commonly strikes when a sufferer is placed within a social setting. Key skill - accepting change The first key skill is accepting that change is necessary. When you are trying to change your thought processes you need coping skills that will give you the confidence to let go of anxious thinking. Some people are only anxious about one particular type of activity. You may even feel that you have travelled so far along that road that you consider yourself to have recovered from Anxiety. With a core belief such as Im useless at everything or I never get anything right you could well find that other people see you quite differently - as competent and reliable for instance. The right to your feelings. You will, for sure, have learnt much about yourself, and about Anxiety. You may decide to explore your creativity, learn a new skill or widen your social network. Structure the goals in small controlled steps. All that we are is the result of what we have thought. All of the techniques used for managing Anxiety will be useful, but you will have to allow the time for your body to get used to the reduction in your dosage. my heart started to beat rapidly . Relax and feel the difference. Script for muscle relaxation This simple relaxation exercise teaches you to tense each set of muscles in turn and then relax it. For some people the lack of confidence goes deeper than the Anxiety, into a fundamental part of their make up. Feel anxious all the time. This increases your sense of isolation and adds to your stress, which only makes the OCD worse. Typical situations which cause anxiety are: You may find that one person has a soothing presence and you enjoy their company, while another is helpful in a practical way. Very often these beliefs are so deeply ingrained that were not aware of them, or if we are, they feel like universal truths. Many of the symptoms of withdrawal are similar to those of Anxiety and it may be difficult to tell whether what you are experiencing is temporary or whether the underlying Anxiety is resurfacing. Food: you may be afraid of being sick or choking, or you may have an obsession with food hygiene. Your brain sends messages back to your body so that it can start the process of healing the damage youve just done to yourself. For example, someone with a cleaning ritual might choose to stop cleaning the living room while still cleaning the kitchen and bathroom on the basis that the greatest risk of infection lies in those two rooms. But this thing doesnt always have to sting and burn. Kim had a long, difficult struggle with Anxiety disorder, and kept it a secret for quite a good portion of her life. If they have a fear of having a panic attack, then they need to learn to be in situations that might provoke one. Breathe out in stages, with a short pause between each one - use two, three or four stages. Greek plays always aimed to send people home feeling better in this way - even a tragic play or film, while sad at the time, produces a feeling of release and catharsis afterwards. And the more you practice this reversal of thought, the better you will get at it and be able to manage your Anxiety attack better the next time you feel one coming on. What if they had stopped breathing? They may decide that youre just shy, or guess that theres some sort of problem. The absolute WORST thing you can do is to act as if they are LYING or ACTING to get attention. The natural sugar (or fructose) that occurs in fruit doesnt have this effect on your body. If I have a panic attack and the teacher sees me theyll think Im a bad parent and a stupid person. In addition they can remind you to use your coping skills. Self-fulfilling prophesies will lead you to give up trying to recover, because you think the world doesnt hold anything worthwhile for you. If getting out of a certain situation appears to make Anxiety go away, then it seems logical to avoid going into the situation in the first place. This means that the counsellor must be appropriately trained and qualified, work to a Code of Ethics & Practice and be subject to a complaints procedure.

Its not about always getting your own way, or getting other people to do what you want.

These kinds of beliefs are self-fulfilling - if you believe that you cant cope, then the chances are that you wont cope. Take the bus for five stops, sitting apart from helper.
